By using offgridstories.com (“the site”), you agree to these Terms of Service. If you don’t agree, please don’t use the site. We’ve tried to keep this readable.

1. Who we are

Off Grid Stories is owned and operated by Off Grid Living & Survival™ Magazine. References to “we,” “us,” and “our” refer to that organization.

2. Eligibility

You must be at least 13 years old to use this site, and at least 18 to submit a story. By using the site, you represent that you meet these age requirements.

3. Submitting stories, comments, and votes

When you submit a story, post a comment, or cast a vote, you confirm that:

  • The content is yours, or you have explicit permission to publish it.
  • It does not infringe anyone’s copyright, trademark, or privacy.
  • It is truthful (we celebrate real stories — please don’t fabricate).
  • It is not spam, harassment, hate speech, illegal, or sexually explicit.
  • It does not promote or instruct on illegal activity.
  • You understand that stories are auto-published — we may remove anything that violates these terms after the fact.

4. Your content stays yours

You retain full copyright in everything you submit. By submitting, you grant us a non-exclusive, worldwide, royalty-free license to display, distribute, and promote your story on offgridstories.com and on our sister sites and social channels (offgridmag.com, offgridlivingsurvival.com, our newsletter, and our magazine), with credit to you.

You can ask us to take down your content at any time by emailing hello@offgridstories.com. We will remove it within 14 days.

5. What we won’t do with your content

  • Sell it to a third party.
  • Edit it substantively without your permission (we may correct typos, improve readability, or trim length, but we won’t change your meaning).
  • Claim authorship.

6. Site content

Everything on the site that isn’t user-submitted (theme, branding, editorial articles, design, code) is owned by us or our licensors. You may not copy, modify, or republish it without permission.

7. Conduct

You agree not to:

  • Harass, threaten, or abuse other users
  • Impersonate others
  • Attempt to bypass our voting, anti-spam, or rate-limiting systems
  • Scrape the site programmatically without permission
  • Upload malicious code or attempt to compromise the site
  • Use the site to send spam or solicit unsolicited offers

We reserve the right to remove content, ban users, or terminate accounts that violate these rules — at our discretion, with no obligation to provide notice or refund.

8. Off-grid information disclaimer

This is critical, so please read it carefully.

Off-grid living involves real risks: electrical work, structural construction, water systems, fire, wildlife, weather, isolation. Stories on this site describe what individual storytellers did — they are not professional engineering, electrical, plumbing, structural, medical, legal, or financial advice.

  • Before doing electrical work, hire a licensed electrician or follow your local code.
  • Before building structures, check local zoning, permits, and engineering requirements.
  • Before installing wood stoves, follow manufacturer specs and local fire code.
  • Before consuming wild plants or hunting, verify with a local expert.
  • Before making medical or financial decisions about going off-grid, consult appropriate professionals.

You assume full responsibility for any actions you take based on information found on this site. We do not warrant that any information is accurate, complete, current, or safe for your specific situation.

9. Tip jar links

Storytellers may include links to their own tip jar pages (Buy Me a Coffee, Ko-fi, Venmo, PayPal, Stripe, etc.). These links go to third-party services. We do not process or hold any tips. Any transaction is between you and the third-party platform — we are not responsible for issues that arise.

10. Third-party links and content

The site may link to third-party websites. We are not responsible for their content, policies, or practices.

11. DMCA / Copyright complaints

If you believe your copyrighted work has been used on the site without permission, send a DMCA takedown notice to dmca@offgridstories.com with:

  • Your contact info
  • Identification of the copyrighted work
  • The URL of the infringing material
  • A statement that you have a good-faith belief the use is unauthorized
  • A statement, under penalty of perjury, that the information is accurate
  • Your physical or electronic signature

We respond to valid notices within a reasonable timeframe.

12. Termination

We may suspend or terminate your access to the site at any time, for any reason, without notice — particularly for violations of these terms.

13. Limitation of liability

To the maximum extent permitted by law, we are not liable for indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages arising from your use of the site. Our total liability for any claim is limited to the greater of $100 USD or the amount you paid us in the past 12 months (which is, for most users, $0).

14. Indemnification

You agree to indemnify and hold us harmless against any claims arising from your content, your use of the site, or your violation of these terms.

15. Changes to these terms

We may update these terms occasionally. Material changes will be announced on the homepage for at least 30 days, and the “Last updated” date at the top will reflect the change. Continued use of the site means you accept the updated terms.
